Thinking about a career offshore? Start with the people who’ve already made the move.

Norfolk is one of the most active regions for offshore wind, oil, gas, and marine research.

The area is part of the “East of England Energy Coast” home to a strong network of energy and marine service companies, and benefits from a skilled local workforce with decades of offshore experience.

Based at the Norfolk Coast, Gardline is a specialist offshore survey company that provides the data and insights needed to plan and deliver projects at sea-this includes providing a comprehensive range of marine services including geophysical, geotechnical and environmental surveys.

In this blog, we spoke to three talented people who made the move asking them to share their experiences — what brought them to Norwich and Gardline, why they’ve chosen to build their lives here, and what working in the offshore/onshore sector means to them.

If you’re wondering if moving to Norwich is the right decision, continue reading and find out what life could look like for you here.

Kelly, Crewing Manager

From Cardiff to Norwich

I moved to Norwich in 2011, after several years working offshore for Gardline while living in Cardiff. I was looking to transition into an onshore role and was offered a position at Gardline’s head office. In 2017, my family and I moved to a village just outside the city, enjoying the best of both city and rural life.

As a crewing manager at Gardline, my team and I look after all offshore personnel, handling rotations and travel arrangements for the business.

It’s a vibrant city with plenty going on, yet just a short trip to the Norfolk Broads and the stunning coastline—perfect for unwinding.

I love going to gigs with friends, shopping with my family, and heading to the coast for sandy beaches and walks with my children. I’m also part of a running club in Great Yarmouth, which keeps me active and connected to the local community.

What advice would you give to those moving to Norwich?

Norwich offers something for everyone. Explore the area first—there’s a great mix of neighbourhoods, each balancing city energy with the coastal lifestyle.

Simon, Head of Geoconsultancy

From Scotland to Norwich

I moved to Norwich in 2013. I’d just completed my MSc in Dundee when my twin brother spotted a Gardline job ad and sent it my way. I got the role—and the move soon followed.

I’m Head of Geoconsultancy at Gardline, leading a team of geotechnical engineers and lab technicians. We support offshore site investigations (mainly for offshore wind, but also oil & gas and infrastructure) handling everything from technical planning and data collection to lab testing and engineering design.

Norwich is a small, friendly city that’s easy to navigate but full of life.

The weather’s a huge improvement from Northern Ireland, and the food scene is fantastic. Being close to the coast and the Broads makes it perfect for nature lovers.

Some of my favourite things to do include playing golf in the sunshine, relaxing in local pubs with friends, and enjoying BBQs, seaside walks, and time on the Broads.

It’s a great place to live, combining a vibrant city with beautiful natural surroundings and a high quality of life.

Breanna, Business Line Manager for the Environmental Department

From Colorado, USA to Norwich

I moved to Norwich 11 years ago for a job with Gardline. My role involves overseeing all tenders and projects within the Environmental division within Gardline.

Settling in was hectic; I spent two weeks in a hotel while house-hunting, followed by a few weeks of training. About a month after moving, I finally settled into my flat.

I love that Norwich is so walkable. For my first three years here, I didn’t even own a car—which is very unusual coming from the US.

When I first arrived, I enjoyed going out in the evenings with friends and catching gigs.

Now, since having my child, I gravitate more towards outdoor activities, nature walks, camping trips, and visiting the beach.

Looking back, I realise there were small but important details I hadn’t planned for—like the unexpected challenges of opening a bank account.

I recommend spending some time exploring different parts of the city before deciding where to live—each area has its own character. Also, try joining activities or meet-up groups soon after you arrive. Building a local support network is especially important if you’re far from family.
