One of the reasons Norwich continues to attract people who want to work differently is the sheer range of options available. From cafés and community hubs to countryside locations just outside the city, Norwich makes it easier to shape a working day that fits around life, and not the other way round.

What’s particularly unique about Norwich is how accessible these alternatives are; whether you’re looking for somewhere social and central, or somewhere calm and surrounded by nature.

The Lions’ Den City

The Lions’ Den City was created as a place people can return to again and again; “a space where wellbeing, work and connection sit naturally within everyday life.” The vision behind the space is rooted in belonging rather than occasional use.

As the team explains, “We wanted to create a space that feels less like a venue you visit occasionally and more like a place you belong to. It is your new living room, and Norwich’s too.”

The Lions’ Den City (White Lion Street) is located in the heart of Norwich. This venue features rooftop saunas with views of landmarks like the Castle and City Hall. It includes indoor and outdoor saunas, a studio for classes, and a café that can be used as a co-working space serving a variety of beverages and non- alcoholic drinks. Bringing their ethos into the city centre expands how people can spend time there across movement, sauna, work, food and creativity, creating a co-working environment shaped by real life rather than rigid productivity.

At its core, Lions’ Den City values presence and flexibility.

“We value real life experiences,” the team says. City is designed as “a space where movement, warmth, creativity and rest sit side by side.” A typical workday might include arriving to focus for a few hours, staying for “a coffee and a chat,” and finding that “none of it feels rushed or transactional.”

Co-working Club

On Wednesday mornings the Lions’ Den hosts a Co-Working Club, starting at 9.30am. It is a dedicated time to work alongside others, meet new faces and avoid the midweek slump. With unlimited refill breakfasts from their cafe menu, a worker’s lunch, super fast Wi-Fi and a relaxed structure, it adds an extra layer of community for those who want it.

With saunas and studio classes on-site, working from The Lions’ Den means you can move, sauna or try something new without going elsewhere, changing how a workday feels, for the better.

“There’s a strong sense of independence, creativity and community here in Norwich.

We listen closely to our community, and they value balance, relationships and quality of life. They have helped shape what we are building. Our community is made up of everyone. Conversations start easily, collaborations happen organically, and there is space to think as well as do.”

Being based in Norwich allows us to prioritise presence over pressure. Work can still be ambitious and meaningful, but it does not have to be frantic. You can arrive alone, feel comfortable, and leave feeling more connected than when you walked in.

Fritton Lake

Beyond the city, alternative workspaces take on a different pace altogether. Places like Fritton Lake show how working days can be shaped around calm, space and wellbeing, rather than rigid structure or formality. It offers something closer to a workday retreat; a place where you can bring your laptop, settle into shared café or clubhouse spaces, and let the day unfold at a gentler rhythm.

The appeal isn’t about desks, schedules or formal setups. It’s about environment.

Being surrounded by open landscape, water and fresh air changes how work feels.

Focus comes more naturally when pressure is removed, and there is space to think without interruption.

Workdays at Fritton Lake tend to move fluidly.

Tasks are broken up by a walk around the lake, time outdoors between meetings, or a proper lunch away from the screen. That freedom to move, pause and reset is built into the day, rather than treated as a distraction from it.

This kind of flexibility often leads to better focus and a more enjoyable working day overall.

Without the intensity of working from home, people are able to work in a way that feels more human and sustainable. As part of the wider mix of work-friendly locations in and around Norwich, Fritton Lake offers a compelling alternative.

It shows how productivity and wellbeing can sit side by side, and how space, nature and ease can support the way people actually want to live and work now.

How coworking in Norwich supports George

After ten years in London, George and his partner Sophie decided to return to Norwich when they found out they were expecting their first child.

“Living in a one-bed flat in East London with a dog no longer felt sustainable.” What started as a practical decision however, quickly became something more; since moving away they came back and rediscovered a city that had grown into a vibrant, relaxed place with great cafés, restaurants, and a strong sense of community.

“To me, Norwich now feels like a friendlier version of London; offering all the good parts without the stress and intensity.”

Thanks to his hybrid role, George only needs to travel into London once or twice a week, which makes it possible to balance a city-based career with a calmer life in Norfolk. “The direct train to Liverpool Street means I can stay connected to work, while spending most of my time working from home or in local spaces around Norwich, such as the Lions Den City cafe.”

That sense of balance is also reflected in George’s work with Unyoked, a company that creates off-grid cabins designed to help people disconnect from the pressures of modern life and reconnect with nature. With cabins set in beautiful rural locations — including Norfolk — Unyoked encourages guests to slow down, cook over open fires, listen to music on cassette, and simply be present in their surroundings.

"In many ways, the ethos of Unyoked mirrors my own move back to Norwich: stepping away from the intensity of the city and choosing a lifestyle that prioritises wellbeing, nature, and time for what really matters."
